i quite like this song, its musically good. yellowcard is comprised of fantastic musicians, of those that know more than just riffing or playing basic chords, but of a certain higher level of musicality. 4 years in band has got to do somethin good for my ears.
til i finally got the lyrics into my head. i realised, punk is just emo too. simply forgetting about everything else, and pulling yourself deeper into worldly substances. and then it hit me. since when has songs ever been less than pagan? there are only three types of songs, one that focuses on love, nothing but love, unrequited, lost, any kind of love this world can offer, which indirectly focuses back on the world itself. the other would be the worldly substances and desires, angst, depression, punk, black rap. are songs merely a tool to unfocus ourselves to the world?
yet, the third type. songs that focus on the wonders of the spiritual. not supernatural, for they are of the world too. but songs focused on worship and adoration. yes, its a kind of love too. but this love is not of these world, its divine love. its the only set of songs that bring us closer to God for its an offering to Him who saves, Him who showers His blessings on us, Him who comforts, Him who loves.
why do we write songs? its the same as writing poems. inspiration. so its not the songs that define us, they are mere reflections of what we are, but it is the inspiration from which we derive from that defines what kind of person we are. some write out of lost love, hence heartbroken people, people who aren't able to move forward. others write out of angst, hence the jarring music and the accusatory lyrics, reflections of the person's state of mind.
it is important to know where we derive our inspiration from. then can we know which path we're truly heading for.
You set my feet upon the rock.
